Effective Tourism Promotions for Communities

With tourism dollars spent by consumers stretched more thinly across more destinations with more attractions than ever, it's challenging to find new ways to promote your region as a world-class tourist destination.  Media is saturated with expensive TV ad productions, interactive web ads, glossy travel magazine ads, and tourism package deals to experience another new vacation place.

When your chamber of commerce is looking to promote your region as a travel destination, you may have a travel and convention committee, or a visitors bureau at your fingertips.  When this is the case, it's easy for your specialized travel and visitors team to focus on the priority of bringing people to your region.  If you don't have the luxury of a team to focus on building tourism, the challenges of bringing travelers to your region can be rather daunting when combined with your chamber of commerce's primary functions of business development and communication.

Whether you have a specialized tourism department or not, there are effective ways to promote tourism.  Running ads on travel channels, travel websites, or using Google Adwords for searches related to your regional attractions definitely helps bring new attention to your area.  Once you've accomplished regional identity through these advertising campaigns though, the next challenge is to raise expenditures in your region directly from the tourists.  Having attractive dining options, hotels, parks, shopping, and transportation systems must be established before the marketing of your region can raise sales receipts directly from tourists spending money there.

One of the ways to raise sales receipts while also helping to further the marketing efforts of your region is through creating tourism collectibles that are available for sale in local retail stores.  These can include limited edition ornaments, collectors plates, custom afghans, collectors mugs, and many other items featuring attractions unique to your city or region.

When these collectibles are first made available within your area, marketing them to the local residents first can help kick-start their popularity.  The city mayor, county executive, or another prominent leader within your region may help this kick-off for your collectible by purchasing the first one as soon as they are available.  This event should be publicized by contacting local media first and inviting them to cover the debut of the collectible.  The demand for the collectible immediately after coverage by local media will sharply increase, so it is important that your chamber feature the collectible's picture and a way to purchase on your website.

Partner organizations and community organizations should be invited to feature the collectible on their websites too with links directly back to a webpage where the purchase can be completed.  If your chamber of commerce doesn't use a shopping cart for its website, then contact information to make the purchase should be listed instead of a buy-now feature.

How effective has this technique been to promote regional attractions and raise funds for a chamber of commerce or special project sponsored by a chamber?  Over 800 chambers have utilized a Treasured Scenes collectible to raise awareness of their region, promote tourism, and raise funds.  The program has featured historical districts, past community leaders, natural resources, and unique businesses as assets to celebrate among thousands of communities.  What's to celebrate about the community your chamber of commerce serves?
